For What?

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I notice a subtle-yet-present rivalry with certain people in different environments. Almost stone faced, I think their coldness comes from a desire to project superiority rather than actually possessing it.
When the gauntlet is thrown down through overt or smug disrespect, what should you do? Well, I thought about it, and I guess the best strategy is [...]

The Game

Echo & the Bunnymen are one of my favorite bands from way back. Even when I was in high school, they released a great album called Evergreen. You can hear their music on most film soundtracks, as well.
I think that no matter what your taste in music happens to be, you’ll enjoy this track.

Glamour

Fact is, when people imagine themselves being famous they assume that it means going to galas, accepting awards and being praised. That’s why the dream of celebrity status is so coveted–because you’re in a class above normal people.
Ironically, few actually sit down and think about the task at hand. For actors, this means long periods spent waiting for [...]

Push It to the Limit

Walk along the razor’s edge
but don’t look down, just keep your head

This has to be the best video game trailer ever made.

Madison Avenue

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

A friend from NYC gave me about a dozen episodes of Mad Men, the television show about advertising executives set in the 1960’s. One of the best parts about the show is the graphic that includes a man plunging to his death throughout the introduction credits.
For all the racism, sexism, and homophobia that occur in [...]

All hands on deck at dawn

Sailing to sadder shores
Your port in my heavy storms
Harbours the blackest thoughts
***
I just want one day, one moment, where it all comes down to a finite event. You know– an end, the end. Then you can really say: “It’s over!,” or what have you.
Then you can go home. Forever.

Big Time

Al Pacino is just one of those people, you know? Him and Robert DeNiro are my two favorite actors. Isn’t it interesting that one of the most renown American faces in cinema, basically the guy with the most character, comes from the Bronx and was born from Italian immigrant parents? You know you’re never going to [...]

Dark, Disturbing

You want to see the worst, the very worst in people, I will point you to the work of Andrew and Alice Vachss. Both are lawyers, authors, and married not just to each other, but to their careers in the pursuit of justice.
A 1989 article on Andrew gives us a vision of a man adrift in [...]

The Darjeeling Limited

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Just saw the advance screening of Wes Anderson’s latest, The Darjeeling Limited. Starring Owen Wilson (who was recently hospitalized on August 26 after a suicide attempt), there is also a brief cameo by Bill Murray–a bit of razzle dazzle thrown in that adds nothing to the virtually non-existant plot.

I won’t call Anderson completely insensitive to [...]

Lecture Time

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Another event of note that occurred yesterday happened at the tent for various ethnic magazines. I went over to get a look at the publications that are designed for immigrant communities, and there was this older man giving a rant to the disinterested organizers behind the table.
He kept going on and on about how the [...]
